How to Choose a Sofa for a Small Living Room

A lot of the homes around Chico — the older bungalows downtown, the starter homes off East Avenue — have living rooms that were never built around an oversized sectional. That doesn't mean you're stuck choosing between comfort and fit. It means measuring first and shopping second.

Measure before you fall in love with anything

  • Measure the actual wall you plan to place it against, not just the general room size.
  • Measure your doorways, hallway width, and any stairwells — a sofa that fits the room on paper still has to get there.
  • Leave at least 30–36 inches of walkway space in front of the sofa for traffic flow.

Look for apartment-size and modular options

Apartment-size sofas (typically 60–72 inches wide, versus 84+ for a standard sofa) give you full-depth, full-comfort seating in a smaller footprint. Modular pieces — like our My Style II collection — let you configure an apartment-size sofa now and add a chaise or corner piece later if you move to a bigger space.

Choose lighter, tailored silhouettes

Low, boxy arms and a tight back read as more compact than the same sofa with rolled arms and loose pillow backs, even at the same measurements. Lighter fabric and leg-forward frames (sofas that show a little leg rather than a floor-length skirt) also make a small room feel less crowded.

Don't skip the comfort test

A smaller sofa still needs to be a sofa you actually want to sit on every day. Come sit on a few — cushion depth and seat height matter more to comfort than overall size. Our sales team can walk you through which of our 17+ brands run smaller or larger for your frame and room.
