Solid Wood vs. Veneer: What's the Difference?

"Is it real wood?" is one of the most common questions we get on the showroom floor, and the honest answer is: it depends on the piece, and that's not automatically a bad thing. Solid wood and veneer construction both show up in quality furniture — the difference is what each one is good at.

What solid wood actually means

Solid wood furniture is built from boards of a single species — oak, maple, cherry, alder — milled and joined into a frame, panel, or tabletop. There's no layering; if you sanded through the finish, you'd hit the same wood all the way down. It can be repaired, refinished, and re-stained over decades, and it tends to develop a deeper patina with age rather than wearing out.

What veneer actually means (and why it's not automatically "cheap")

Veneer is a thin layer of real wood bonded over a more dimensionally stable core, usually plywood or MDF. Good veneer construction is genuinely useful: wide tabletops and large case pieces move less with humidity changes than solid slabs of the same size, and veneer lets manufacturers use figured or exotic wood grain that would be prohibitively expensive — or unstable — in solid form. The distinction that actually matters is quality of construction, not solid-vs-veneer alone: a well-built veneered piece from a reputable manufacturer will outlast a poorly built solid one.

How to tell which you're looking at

  • Check the grain pattern where two panels meet — solid wood grain is continuous and a little irregular; veneer grain often repeats in a mirrored or too-perfect pattern.
  • Look at the edges and undersides. Manufacturers often leave an edge unfinished or use a different material for interior parts not meant to be seen.
  • Ask. A knowledgeable sales floor (ours included) will tell you straight what's solid and what's veneered on any given piece, and why.

Our take

We carry both, deliberately. Brands like Simply Amish, Archbold, and Whittier Wood build primarily in solid hardwood for bedroom and dining pieces meant to be passed down. For larger case goods and certain finishes, a well-made veneer construction is the right engineering choice, not a shortcut. If you're furnishing a piece you want to own for 20+ years, come by the showroom on the Esplanade and we'll show you the difference in person — it's a lot easier to feel than to describe.
